The 2021 GMC Yukon: Big Wheelin'
What's new:
The Yukon enters
an all-new fifth generation for 2021. It grows in size, gets an independent
rear suspension, gains some nice upgrades in tech and interior, and adds an
off-road-oriented AT4 trim for the first time.
What's hot:
·
Modernized interior that’s packed with cutting-edge tech.
·
Legroom for miles, with sufficient accommodations even in the third row.
·
The optional air suspension and AT4’s terrain tires provide a sumptuous,
cloud-soft ride.
What's not:
·
Spongy handing and vague brakes.
·
Some of the new tech features seem not entirely fully-baked.
·
Its even more massive size can make it feel awkward in heavy traffic and
close-quarters maneuvering.
The Yukon has long been the SUV of choice for folks who want to live
large—really large. And for this year’s total redesign, GMC has made it even
bigger, adding about 5 inches to the wheelbase and 6 to the length overall. The
cavernous interior grows too, with big increases in third-row legroom and cargo
capacity in particular. It’s also a heavier rig, with my four-wheel-drive
tester weighing in at just over 6,000 lbs, and the loaded-up Denali flagship
tipping the scales at even more. Even so, GMC insists that the Yukon is
optimized for “active lifestyles,” especially the new AT4—the designated
off-road trim that GMC is rolling out across its vehicle lineup, most ruggedly
on its Sierra pickups. So with just one sunny but smoke-choked September day at
my disposal with this beast, I faced a decision: take it up into the
fire-ravaged mountains for the trail-bashing that the AT4 was made for? Or
stick to the tame suburban environments that form the posher Denali’s natural
habitat? Well, the AT4 was the hand I was happily dealt, so set out for the
wilds I did.
