The 2021 Ford Super Duty: A Towing Behemoth

Written by: Jen Dunnaway, Automotive Editor

What's new:

Following a significant refresh in 2020, Ford’s “Super Duty” line of heavy-duty pickups plows ahead into 2021 fundamentally unchanged, though certain color choices and options packages see expanded availability throughout the lineup. (Editor’s Note: the F-350 reviewed here is a 2020).

What's hot:

·         Mind-melting towing capacities beat everything in the class.

·         Advanced trailering tech, including an available steer-by-dial backup assist, makes towing a snap.

·         Available diesel yields over 1,000 lb-ft of torque while keeping fuel economy manageable.

What's not:

  • Infotainment system falls behind those of more recently-updated competitors.
  • Interior and on-road refinement aren’t at the level of key rivals.
  • No available air suspension

Ford’s Super Duty pickups, notably the F-350 and F-250, have long been America’s go-to when it comes to tackling the biggest jobs. These supersized Fords will tow gargantuan loads without breaking a sweat, and since their 2020 refresh, offer a host of new tech and features to help make trailering a breeze for the driver as well. But the truck wars are a neverending arms race, and with its primarily utilitarian focus, the Super Duty risks falling behind competitors who are rushing to improve upon infotainment and creature comforts. The shortfall is even more conspicuous now that the F-150, Ford’s own bread-and-butter bestseller, has received a complete redesign this year that rolls out many of the trick frills and features that today’s consumers seem to care about. Can the Super Duty still win consumers’ hearts with its sheer brute competence? Well, it has that in spades, so if that’s ultimately what truck-buyers want in a heavy-duty, it’s well positioned to hang onto its crown.
